Hi, everyone! I’m so excited to be Winnie & Walter‘s Leading Lady this month!! Every Saturday, I’ll be sharing projects with a weekly theme. Today’s theme is stencilling. I made two cards, each one with a completely different stencilling technique, and two of my favourite ways to use stencils.

My first card uses The Leaf Effect stencil with embossing paste tinted with three shades of green distress inks. It’s a great technique that allows me to customize the colour of the paste. In this case, I created greenery for the hanging birdhouse. The In a Word: Home die was sponged using purple distress inks.

The birdhouse and bird, from Happiest of Holidays and used here to show versatility in a non-holiday design, were coloured with Copic markers. I applied a generous coat of Wink of Stella on the bird. Since I was partially stamping sweet home on some of the embossing paste, I didn’t want it to react and bleed so I used archival ink. I also used my MISTI stamping tool to make sure it lined up and, if it didn’t stamp well the first time, stamp it again in the same spot.

My second card uses the Madison stencil with daubers and a rainbow of distress inks to create a bold background that allows simple flowers and leaves from Anna’s Flora to shine without added colour. All I did was add some sparkling clear sequins for a bit of shine. The sentiment was created with a combination of stamps and dies from The Big, the Bold and Friends and The Big, the Bold and Party Cutaways.

Here are the two cards shown side-by-side to show how stencils can be used in two very different ways. I love the option of creating a lot of texture versus keeping it flat.

  1. Awesome awesome cards, Emily! Don't know which one's better! But using three distress inks in embossing paste! Mind blowing – I did think there was a shading in those leaves, then when I read you had used embossing paste, I had to see it once more – it was still there!!! Totally amazing!

  2. I love both of these and I was just working with stencils last night! I have not played with coloring my embossing paste! Going to do that today!!! Thank u for the inspiration

  3. Emily, a duo of gorgeous cards, featuring innovative ways to use stencils. The bird house is darling; the florals, lovely! You are most certainly an impressive "leading lady" creating magic with these W&W products.

  4. Had to come tell you that I am sooooo impressed with that secondary sentiment on your new home card. I would have been sweating bullets stamping that onto the dimensional paste. Guess that is one more reason to invest in a MISTI! Lovely projects.

  5. Fabulous stencilling, Emily … the texture with that sweet birdhouse is brilliant … love those line florals against all that gorgeous colour! What a fantastic debut as Leading Lady! Anita 🙂

  6. How delightful to see you in the Leading Lady post! Emily, you've given new life to that darling Christmas set with your darling periwinkle bird! Both cards are just charming! Fingers crossed!

  7. It's always a pleeasure to see what you have up your sleeve, and this post is no exception. Love the colored paste but the scene you surrounded it with is simply charming. Great color and design. Your second card captures the attention with it's vibrancy and the bold black sentiment. Excellent work.

  8. Emily, congrats for your Leading Lady selection. I'll be here every Saturday to see what you created for us. Todays cards are super. Both stenciling techniques are beautiful. Thanks.

  9. I love your cards. Everything you create is awesome and so inspiring. I have neglected my stencils and embossing paste, but these cards have reminded me how much I love using paste and stencils with ink too. Thanks for sharing your cards.

  10. I love your use of stencils in both cards. I especially love the varying shades of green embossing paste & the gorgeous purple together. Really lovely!

  11. I love both of these cards. The one with the birds is so subtle and sweet while the other one has more vibrant colors, yet they are equally beautiful and impactful! Happy birthday to Winnie and Walter!

  12. CONGRATULATIONS on being Leading Lady Emily!!!
SO HAPPY for YOU and for US too 🙂
LOVE both of your cards, the designs are DELIGHTFUL, the colours & colouring SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Great idea with the tinting in the embossing paste, a product and technique I look forward to trying!!!
THANK YOU for sharing your CREATIVE INSPIRATION, can't wait to see what you have to share with us next week!!!

  13. These are both beautiful! I love the soft green for the embossing paste stencilling; but also the bright fun colours of the distress ink stencilling! So nicely done!

  14. Such beautiful cards, Emily! Absolutely love the color combo on the "home" card – and I had no idea you could actually stamp over embossing paste. The bright colors on the second card made a lovely background for the flowers.

  15. I love using stencils and embossing paste. I adore your use of the leaf stencil and the way you let it break off partway down the card. Very artistic. Great colours on the second one. Makes for a bold contrast. Fabulous designs!

  16. Just beautiful! I love the versatility of stencils. Your bold, colorful background d on the second card looks gorgeous with your simple, black and white die cut flowers!
